How to play Daily Tile Battle

Uncover tiles, collect three of a kind, and leave space for your next move. Here is how a daily run works.

1. Pick your team and start

Select Start Game. On your first visit, choose a U.S. state or Washington, D.C., save it, then select Start Game again. You can join from any country; your team is not a verified location.

No account signup is required. Enable JavaScript and allow site storage to play. Your team and verified results are associated with this browser.

2. Choose uncovered tiles

Tap a tile to move it into your tray. A tile covered by any tile in a higher layer cannot be selected. Removing the upper tiles reveals more choices underneath.

Teaching diagram, not today's board. Even a partial overlap by a higher tile blocks the lower tile. Two tiles on the same layer do not block each other.

Three match; seven unmatched tiles end the run

Tiles of the same kind group together in the seven-slot tray. When a third arrives, all three disappear automatically. If seven tiles remain after that check, the run ends.

Six spaces used โ€” one space left

Pick an uncovered apple โ€” three apples clear

Teaching example. The third apple clears even when it is the seventh tile added. A new kind that completes no match would fill this tray and end the run.

Clear the board, tray and any reserved tiles to win. An empty board is not enough while tiles remain in your tray or reserve.

3. Clear both levels

Level 1 has 18 tiles. Clearing it unlocks Level 2, with 168 tiles, 10 kinds, and seven overlapping layers. A retry starts again at Level 1.

Only a server-verified Level 2 clear adds a State Battle contribution. Repeating a win does not add multiple contributions for the same player and daily puzzle version.

Use your tools

  • Move out 3: move the last three tray tiles into a temporary reserve. It needs at least three tray tiles and an empty reserve. Tap reserved tiles to bring them back; they are moved, not deleted. Only one reserve group can be open.
  • Undo 1: reverse your previous valid move, including a match, when available. It does not require an ad. This is not an unlimited move history: using Move out 3 or Shuffle clears the previous undo.
  • Shuffle: rearrange the remaining board into a solvable order while preserving tiles already removed and the current tray. It is unavailable with tiles in reserve, after the run ends, or with six different kinds in the tray. It does not automatically clear the level.

Each new Level 2 run starts with one free Move out 3 and one free Shuffle. When a tool has no uses left, a successful native share can add one more use. Canceling a share adds none; system sharing is not available in every browser.

If rewarded ads become available, you may choose an ad to earn one additional use of the selected tool. Ads are optional and may have no available inventory. Read how ad rewards work.

A few useful habits

Keep space for tiles you need to uncover. Look at the layers before committing to a match. Music and sound can be switched off, and the interface respects your device's reduced-motion setting.

The puzzle resets at midnight in America/New_York, which may be a different time in your country. Leaving a run discards its unfinished board; a saved verified result remains recorded.

How State Battle counts a clear

The server checks your completed Level 2 run before adding a contribution. Each player contributes at most once per daily puzzle version. A result still being verified is not yet a confirmed contribution.

Official ranks compare clear rates among states with at least 100 unique engaged players. Ties are ordered by verified clears, then state code. Smaller teams are gathering players; early standings are not official ranks. View State Battle.

Common questions

Why can't I tap a tile I can see?

A higher tile may partially overlap it. Remove that tile first. A pending tool request can also briefly lock the board.

Can I resume an unfinished run on another device?

No. Leaving discards the unfinished board. Saved verified results remain, but another device, browser, cleared storage or changed domain may not recognize the same player.

Can I change my state team?

Use Change state on the home page. If you already played today, today's attempts and clear remain with the original team. Your new choice applies tomorrow.

Why is there no official rank for my state?

It needs 100 unique engaged players to qualify. Smaller teams are gathering players. Results and ranks are not filled with invented activity.

What if the game or a result will not load?

Check your connection, enable JavaScript and allow site storage, then retry from the home page. If a completed run has a verification error, use Retry verification before leaving. For persistent issues, contact support with the puzzle date, device and browser. Never send player cookies.

Must I watch an ad or turn on sound?

No. Sound and ads are optional. Extra tool uses depend on actual share or ad availability. Canceling a share adds no use.
